North Austin, TX – June 2016

Bella Beauty College nail technicians are here to teach you, manicures are not purely esthetic.  Nourished nails and healthy skin are an important piece of your overall well-being and should be a part of your regular healthy lifestyle.  For many, the thought of getting a manicure conjures images of long, brightly colored nails, but the truth of the matter is that while Nail Art can be an artistry all its own, Manicures are more about nail health.  You may not think about it much, but for both men and women, fingernails are a subtle and important part of the impression you leave with others.  Think of that first time you go to shake someone’s hand or when someone hands you a pen at a meeting.  If the nails were healthy they probably went unnoticed, but if they were dry, cracked, rough and unhealthy, it left an impression.

Whether you prefer polished nails or opt for a more natural look, you will want to add nail care to part of your daily health routine.   At Bella Beauty College we offer Spa Manicures for only $8.  This relaxing service will not only beautify your hands, but it will help the overall health of your nails as well.  Our beauty school students start by cleansing the hands and nails before moving on to filing and shaping the actual nail.  For those who want to try a little nail maintenance at home, avoid metal nail files which can cause peeling, opt instead for a more flexible emery board.  When buying a nail file, take a look at the grit count.  At Bella Beauty College we recommend between a 220-300 grit, keeping in mind that the harder the nail the higher the grit required and the softer the client’s nail, the lower the grit.  After filing and shaping the nail, our beauty school nail technicians will gently push back the cuticle and nip away any dead skin.  At Bella Beauty College we never cut the cuticle.  It is very important to be gentle with this thin piece of skin and never cut it.  The cuticle acts as the barrier protecting the inside of your body from all the germs of the outside world.  Next our beauty school students will clean under the free edge of the nail before buffing the nails.  Buffing the nails has great health benefits and improves the circulation in the hands.  Likewise, the Spa Manicure hand massage improves blood flow and can help relax aching joints and tense muscles.

For clients who want to keep healthy, nourished hands and nails at home between salon visits, the beauty school students at Bella Beauty College recommend cuticle oil.  Because the skin around your nails, and your nails themselves are so thin, they can dry out quickly.  Both unappealing and unhealthy, this dehydration leads to cracked, rough and peeling skin and nails.  The solution is a simple routine of moisturizing.  You can buy any array of cuticle oil from local beauty or grocery stores.  There are various combinations of brand name oils for all sorts of specific and different purposes, but for those overwhelmed by all the vast options available, you can also make your own at home!  Simply start with a base of Vegetable or Coconut Oil then mix in any of your favorite essential oils:  eucalyptus oil, lavender, avocado or sesame seed oil, or even aloe vera.  Massage this cuticle oil into your nail and at base of your nail even going up to the joints of your fingers for a soothing and relaxing at home hand massage.  Next time you swing by Bella Beauty College ask your nail technician which essential oils they are using in the cuticle oil today and pick your favorites to try at home.
