North Austin, TX – February 2016

When most people hear someone talk about “Valentine’s Day Makeup” the first image that pops into mind their mind is usually the classic red lipstick and simple eye makeup look.  This classic style color has become synonymous with day of romance, but why not shake things up and spice it up this Valentine’s Day?

Bella Beauty College applies makeup

For a dramatic and sensual style, Bella Beauty College recommends the ever sexy smokey eye makeup.  Beauty school students at any of our 5 locations will happily demonstrate this style, giving you the perfect sultry smokey eye for only $10.  But for you do-it-yourselfers, here are a few tips from our beauty school experts.  Begin by applying a light shade of concealer all over your eyelid.  First, line both the top and bottom rims with an eyeliner pencil.  If you have small eyes, apply liner starting from the middle of the under eye to the outside of the eye. If your eyes are larger, feel free to line from corner to corner.  If you are using liquid liner you can place dots on the lash line and then follow the dots to get a perfectly straight line.   Next, soften the edges of the eye pencil line with a small eye shadow brush or a q-tip.  Apply a dark shadow using a sponge-tip applicator, smudge brush, q-tip directly or even just your finger over the penciled area and smudge.  Next apply a lighter shadow in a neutral tone with a larger eye shadow brush.  Encircling the entire eye area, be sure to soften and graduate outward for that perfect blended look.  If you want your eyes to look larger, pull your liner upward when lining your bottom lashes instead of out from the top liner.  This will make your eyes look larger and rounder!  Finally brush away any shadow that has fallen below the eye with a fluffy brush and clean up any areas that have smeared with a q-tip. If you have trouble getting rid of fallout from eye shadow, you can always try using tape to pick up any fallout without smudging your makeup!

Creating a smokey eye isn’t just all about eye makeup, it’s the overall look. So, while you want to do a precise job of applying the right eye shadows in the right places and creating voluptuous lashes, you also wanted to compliment your color pallet by paying attention to your lush lips.   For kissably smooth lips, Bella Beauty College student estheticians Bella Beauty College demonstrates smokey eye makeuprecommends exfoliating and moisturizing before applying color.  Start by slathering on a lip balm with a touch of alphy hydroxy acid to help exfoliate any dead or dull skin from your lips.  Next, apply a creamy balm containing petrolatum, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, or ceramides to really boost your moisture. Avoid waxy formulas which have ingredients that tend not to penetrate.  And keep away from anything heavily flavored or fragranced, which can lead to chapping.  Finally, once your lovely lips are prepped, add your color.

For a natural look, Bella Beauty College suggests a tinted balm with a light SPF, or a soft lip shimmer.  The classic smoky eye generally calls for lightly line lips with a natural color and just a dash of sheer color in peach, caramel, or barely there pink.  A step up from the natural look and your lips could go nude! For the trendier fashionistas out this Valentine’s Day, Bella Beauty College suggests nude on the lips with your smoky eyes.  When attempting this sexy muted lip look at home, the trick is to neutralize the red in your lips.  Start by dabbing foundation with a damp makeup sponge over your lips before applying lipstick.  To select a fleshy shade of lipstick that won’t washout your beauty or leave you looking corpse-like, the beauty school students at Bella Beauty College recommend staying away from the gray based lip shades and sticking with the lip colors that have peachy undertones instead.  But if you desire something a little less tame for your Valentine’s Day, go bold with a bright pink or any other of your favorite long-wearing lip colors.  Add even more drama to your look by lining your lips with a darker lip liner, filled in with a deep color.  Classic or bold, either way you choose, you can’t go wrong this Valentine’s Day with makeup from Bella Beauty College!
